If your home is about to go on the market, or is already for sale, consider these top tips to make the process easier.
Declutter – buyers are usually looking for more space, so clear the decks to leave your property looking calm and clutter-free. Use this as an opportunity to start packing things away; put ornaments, photos, fridge magnets, excess books, and piles of toys away in boxes ready for your move. This will also help depersonalise your home, making it easier for a buyer to picture their own things in a space.
Mend – don't leave buyers thinking they will have lots to do when they move in. Finish those niggling little jobs you’ve been putting off, and give a room a fresh lick of paint if it’s looking tired. It might seem wasteful spending money on a home you are about to leave, but if it’s neutrally decorated, well-presented and inviting, this can be reflected in a higher asking price.
Clean – a clean home creates a good impression and reinforces the message that your home is well-maintained. Make sure everything is spotlessly clean – especially the kitchen and bathrooms. Clean windows and neutralise any off-putting pet odours by washing bedding and opening windows.
Kerb appeal – prevent negative first impressions on any initial drive-by viewings by boosting your home’s kerb appeal. Clean the windows, power wash and weed a drive or pathway, mow the lawn, and add colourful plants in pots or hanging baskets by the front door. Spending a little extra time on the outside will give your home instant appeal and encourage potential buyers to want to step inside and see more.
